Local Engagement Volunteers

Do you believe the STEM community brings a valuable perspective to challenges faced by cities, counties, and states? Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally seeks to inspire, encourage, and empower people in STEM to be active civic participants. We are a dedicated group of volunteers working to help our fellow members of the STEM community more effectively engage with their local communities and governments. And we would be thrilled to have you join our ranks.

Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally is seeking Local Engagement Volunteers in communities across the United States. These volunteers have access to support, funding, and guidance from ESAL to educate and help motivate local community members to act locally. By joining our team, new volunteers will help us to expand our reach to new audiences and will shape the overall direction and themes of civic engagement programming in your community.

ESAL is a national, non-partisan, non-advocacy nonprofit. We seek to inspire, encourage, and empower people with backgrounds in STEM to be active civic participants. And we would be thrilled to have you join our team!

As an ESAL Local Engagement Volunteer you will:

  • Be willing to educate your peers of STEM backgrounds and/or your local community members about local engagement information, opportunities, and contacts.
  • Contribute your local insights to the broader ESAL online network, which will be available to the public by July 2025.
  • Coordinate events, virtual or in-person, that help you reach your community members with this local engagement information.
  • Help identify, contact, and communicate with local civic leaders who are seeking STEM expertise to support their decision making.
  • Contribute about 5-10 hours per month of your time to do the above
  • Make at least a 6 month commitment to volunteering with ESAL

In return, by volunteering with ESAL you will gain the opportunity to:

  • Network with engineers and scientists across the country who are passionate about improving their communities
  • Demonstrate a concrete commitment to science policy and community engagement
  • Work with ESAL leadership -- a dedicated team of engineers and scientists with deep experience in public policy
  • Influence and shape a growing, high-profile science policy and engagement organization
