Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally seeks to inspire, encourage, and empower people in STEM to be active civic participants. We are a dedicated group of volunteers working to help our fellow members of the STEM community more effectively engage with their local communities and governments. And we would be thrilled to have you join our ranks.

We are a dedicated group of volunteers working to help our fellow members of the STEM community more effectively engage with their local communities and governments. And we would be thrilled to have you join our ranks.

ESAL is looking for 1-2 volunteer writers to contribute to our monthly blog series, Stories from the Field and Local STEM, and to help cover our virtual events as well as external events closely-aligned to our mission. Past events hosted by ESAL have included “Building More Resilient Communities in the Face of Climate Change” and “Connecting Art and Science for Effective Community Engagement”.

As an ESAL Writer you will:

  • Write up to 1 article for ESAL’s blog a month
  • For virtual events:
    • Attend virtual event
    • Highlight key issues and take away lessons from each event in a summary blog post
  • For regular blog series articles:
    • Interview article featuree
    • Develop a Q&A style blog article based on the interview
  • Work remotely under the guidance of the ESAL Chair and Content Director
  • Contribute ~10 hr/month of your time to do the above
  • Make at least a 6 month commitment to volunteering with ESAL

In return, by volunteering with ESAL you will gain the opportunity to:

  • Broaden your knowledge of activism, local science issues, and science-policy interfacing by attending a number of events
  • Network with engineers and scientists across the country who are passionate about improving their communities
  • Publish articles under your byline in a widely-read blog
  • Develop new communication skills and learn appropriate tone and style for blog articles
  • Demonstrate a concrete commitment to science policy and community engagement
  • Work with ESAL leadership - a dedicated team of engineers and scientists with deep experience in public policy
  • Influence and shape a growing, high-profile science policy and engagement organization
