ESAL is looking for an organized and motivated Content Coordinator to support ESAL’s content development, turning story ideas into final written and video content. Primarily, the Coordinator will support ESAL writers, the Chief Editor, and the Content Director to create our monthly blog series, Stories from the Field and Local STEM; write-ups of ESAL virtual events; Deep Dive articles; audience-submitted “Postcards” about their local civic engagement actions; and calls for guest writers to write about particular topics at the intersection of local engagement and STEM. ESAL is integrating more video recording of interviews into our workflows, so the Coordinator will share audio and visual files with the Communications Team, who edit and publish them.
As an ESAL Content Coordinator, you will support the development of ESAL content by:
- Contributing content ideas relevant to ESAL’s mission to increase local civic engagement by people with STEM backgrounds;
- Tracking relevant content trends and prioritizing leads that support an overall content strategy;
- Finding authors and coordinating calls for authors with expertise on particular STEM and local civic engagement topics when needed;
- Training writers to meet style, tone, format, and interview protocol expectations;
- Assigning articles to writers and supporting them throughout interviewing, writing, and publishing;
- Delivering interview video recordings to the Communications Team for editing and publishing; and
- Maintaining internal tracking of all content in development.
- Developing or applying knowledge of SEO to tag articles to increase reach
- Developing or applying knowledge of content engagement tracking and reporting
- Authoring content when the Coordinator has time and interest
We hope the Coordinator will:
- Work remotely under the guidance of the ESAL Content Director, Chief Editor, and Managing Director
- Contribute ~10 hr/month of your time to do the above
- Make at least a 6 month commitment to volunteering with ESAL
In return, by volunteering with ESAL you will gain the opportunity to:
- Broaden your knowledge of activism, local science issues, and science-policy interfacing
- Network with engineers and scientists across the country who are passionate about improving their communities
- Publish articles under your byline in a widely-read blog if desired
- Develop new communication and coordination skills
- Demonstrate a concrete commitment to science policy and community engagement
- Work with ESAL leadership - a dedicated team of engineers and scientists with deep experience in public policy
- Influence and shape a growing, high-profile science policy and engagement organization
If you are interested in helping us change how engineers and scientists think about policy engagement, please contact us with a paragraph describing your interest and a link to a bio or an attached resume at
