As local governments tackle issues such as climate resilience and technology for community safety, scientists and engineers, particularly those with science communication experience, can meaningfully contribute to the policymaking process. However, the pathways to make an impact are often opaque and difficult to navigate. This workshop will use real case studies, step-by-step guides, and hands-on activities, providing participants with concrete next steps to make an impact in their communities.
Policymakers, particularly at the local level, are often an overlooked audience for science communication. However, these local decision makers have few resources to learn about and address STEM-related issues that are affecting their communities. This workshop will introduce participants to unique forms of science communication, such as delivering oral and written public comments, providing opportunities to expand their audience and leverage their skills to influence local civic processes.
