As science and evidence-driven policymaking is being deprioritized at the federal level, there is an opportunity for STEM professionals to look locally. Further, the scientific and technical support that underpins development and government services in communities has been impacted by cutbacks and uncertainty under a new federal administration. While it can be challenging for STEM practitioners to influence policymaking at the federal level, there are opportunities in their local communities to become more engaged. Additionally, local policymaking processes are dominated by advocates who may not represent a diverse array of community perspectives, including young, LGBTQ+, or STEM voices. Participants in this workshop will learn to identify and explore these opportunities through an activity and Q&A with local-engagement professionals. Whether you’re a federal scientist or new to science policy, this workshop will educate you on approaches to local engagement and equip you to apply those lessons in your own communities.
