AAAS 2026 - Level Up Locally: Finding Impactful Civic Engagement Opportunities Near You

Scientists often want to make a local impact but are not sure where to start. This workshop will introduce participants to local government structures and generally how to engage with them. Participants will learn about boards and commissions, task forces and advocacy groups where STEM expertise is needed. Participants will learn a step-by-step approach to finding and pursuing local opportunities aligned with their interests. In small groups, they’ll practice researching opportunities in their communities, communicating their value to organizations, and setting personal engagement goals and strategies. Participants will leave with a personalized action plan and a downloadable guide with resources to sustain their civic engagement journey.
