As local governments confront complex policy challenges, the need for data-based solutions is essential. However, data is often incomplete, and successfully using the data that is available can be  administratively challenging for local policymakers who are ill-equipped to fully leverage the information at their fingertips. This creates a valuable opportunity for engineers and other STEM professionals to contribute their expertise to improve their communities. Los Angeles has made progress towards integrating a data-based approach in its government operations, bringing together community stakeholders and technical experts to address issues in public health, social justice, and beyond. In this session, attendees will hear from professionals at the forefront of these efforts in Los Angeles which, in combination with resources from Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL), will provide the inspiration and tools attendees need to drive data-informed decision-making in their own communities.
