AAAS 2026 - Filling the Gap: How STEM Professionals Can Support Local Communities

As the federal government reduces support for local governments, there is an even greater need for scientists and engineers to increase their local engagement. Communities identify needs with solutions that include applying science and engineering research and best practices. However, there is often a lack of collaboration between disadvantaged communities, local governments, and technical service providers (such as engineering, contracting, and design firms). Each group is generally unaware of each other’s resources, abilities, strengths, and constraints. This workshop will provide people of all STEM backgrounds with the skills to build community relationships and an opportunity to practice identifying local opportunities for engagement.
